Referees to Announce VAR Decisions in Carabao Cup Semi-Finals

Referees will announce any video assistant referee decisions to football supporters inside stadiums in England for the first time during the Carabao Cup semi-finals, marking a significant step forward in the integration of technology and communication in football.

As part of a trial, referees will announce final decisions following a visit to the VAR pitchside monitor or when rulings are made on factual matters such as accidental handball by a goalscorer or offside offences where the attacker touches the ball. This initiative aims to enhance the match experience for fans, allowing them to receive immediate updates on contentious decisions in a sport that often faces scrutiny over its officiating processes.

Such announcements are common in other sports such as rugby union and American football, where the transparency of officiating decisions is fundamental to maintaining the trust and engagement of spectators. The system was previously trialled during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, receiving positive feedback from players and fans alike for its clarity and effectiveness.

Both legs in each of the semi-finals – featuring the matchups of Arsenal v Newcastle and Tottenham v Liverpool – will be included in this important trial. This inclusion not only showcases the commitment of the English football authorities to innovate the game but also reinforces the significance of these matches in the league’s calendar.

Refereeing authority PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) asserted that this move is part of its “commitment to transparency,” hoping it will provide greater clarity and understanding around key decisions made during games. Such transparency is increasingly crucial in an era where VAR technology is debated, and fans often look for more context around critical calls.

Referees have been preparing for the in-stadium announcements at training camps and have practised at stadiums already. This preparation indicates a thorough approach to implementing the new system, ensuring that all involved are comfortable and effective in delivering these announcements. The officials designated for the matches will be announced on Tuesday.

Supporting the trial, the Premier League Match Centre account on X has been posting “near-live” explanations of VAR decisions this season. However, this will be the first time that spoken announcements have been given to crowds, potentially setting a precedent for future football matches in England.

The first legs of the cup semi-finals are scheduled to be played on 7 and 8 January 2025, with the return fixtures taking place on 5 and 6 February. This timeline allows ample opportunity for fans and officials to experience the benefits of direct communication regarding VAR decisions, marking a new era in the relationship between referees and supporters in English football.
