𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 | Wayne Rooney is no longer the manager of Plymouth

Plymouth Argyle have sacked head coach Wayne Rooney as the club sits at the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship and will face Bristol City on New Year’s Day.

Wayne Rooney has officially left his role at Plymouth Argyle following a challenging period for the club that saw them unable to secure a victory in their last nine matches. This winless streak has left the team languishing at the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship, raising concerns about their ability to avoid relegation as they sit four points adrift from safety.

Rooney’s tenure at Plymouth began in May, but sadly, it has come to an end just seven months later. His final match in charge occurred on Sunday, where Argyle suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against fellow relegation battlers Oxford United, highlighting the struggles the team has faced throughout the season.

In an official statement released by Plymouth Argyle, the club confirmed: “Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and head coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect.” As part of this coaching reshuffle, assistant head coach Mike Phelan and first-team coach Simon Ireland will also be departing. In the interim, first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards have been appointed to lead the team in their upcoming fixture against Bristol City on New Year’s Day. Goalkeeping coach Daryl Flahavan will remain in his position as the squad prepares for the challenges ahead.

Following his departure, Rooney expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt message on the Plymouth website. He stated, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the board of Plymouth, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, who I shared great relationships with. Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who contribute to making the club such a special place, as well as the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as head coach. I genuinely wish them all the best for the future.”

Rooney went on to acknowledge the passionate fanbase, saying, “To the Green Army, thank you for making the games at Home Park so special. These are memories that we will share forever.” He also gave special recognition to his coaching staff, including Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan, for their dedication and support in what has been a tumultuous time for the club.

Concluding his statement, Rooney left a heartfelt sentiment: “Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.” As the club moves forward, all eyes will be on this transition and how the new coaching arrangements will impact their quest for Championship survival.
