West Ham striker Michail Antonio has been discharged from hospital more than three weeks after sustaining a broken leg in a car accident that occurred on December 7. The 34-year-old forward underwent surgery to address a significant lower limb fracture resulting from the incident.
Antonio’s accident took place in Epping, Essex, where he found himself trapped inside his vehicle after the crash. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene to free him, and he was subsequently transported to a central London hospital for further treatment. His recovery has been closely monitored, and now, after an arduous period of rehabilitation, he has been released back home.
As West Ham’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League, with an impressive tally of 68 goals across 268 league appearances, Antonio’s absence from the squad had a noticeable impact. In a show of solidarity and support, his teammates participated in a heartfelt gesture prior to their match against Wolves on December 9. They proudly wore shirts emblazoned with ‘Antonio 9’ as a tribute to their injured comrade. Remarkably, Antonio was able to connect with them through a video call, bolstering team morale even from his hospital bed.
In light of the circumstances surrounding his injury, the club expressed profound gratitude towards the emergency and medical services that provided critical assistance to Antonio. In a further act of goodwill, West Ham announced their plan to donate nearly £60,000 to both the NHS and Air Ambulances UK charities, a sum generated from the auction of the special tribute shirts worn during the match.
“Everyone at the club would like to reiterate their heartfelt thanks to the first responders, emergency services, air ambulance staff and the NHS for the incredible support given to Michail in the wake of the accident,” West Ham articulated in a statement released on Tuesday, showcasing their appreciation for those who played a pivotal role in his recovery.
Manager Julen Lopetegui reflected on the accident by labeling Antonio’s survival as a “miracle,” underscoring the seriousness of the situation he faced and the bright outcome that followed. Antonio’s return to health and spirits is a beacon of hope for both him and the entire West Ham community as they move forward in the season.
