Eight individuals have been taken into custody following the occurrence of tragedy chants during the dramatic 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield, as confirmed by local police authorities.
Merseyside Police announced that they arrested eight spectators at the Premier League event on Sunday after receiving reports regarding inappropriate chanting relating to past tragedies. Among those detained were a 46-year-old man from Church Warsop, Nottinghamshire, and a 28-year-old man hailing from Hendersonville, Tennessee, USA, both of whom were apprehended under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which addresses the issue of tragedy chanting. In addition to those arrests, police indicated that five men and a woman were requested to voluntarily come in for interviews under caution, suspecting them of engaging in similar behaviour.
Chief Inspector Lisa Ledder strongly condemned the actions of those involved, stating, “Football supporters who resort to chanting about tragedies inflict immense distress upon the families and individuals who have been directly impacted. The pain of losing loved ones is not a trivial matter to be used in rivalries; such behaviour has no justification in football or any sporting event.” She underscored the importance of recognizing the human element behind these chants, asserting that all fans should strive to create an atmosphere of respect and unity.
Furthermore, she affirmed, “Irrespective of which team one supports, we are committed to collaborating with football clubs to identify those responsible and ensure that they face the appropriate consequences. I hope that the arrests made in this instance serve as a decisive warning to others: those who engage in these reprehensible actions risk not only criminal charges but also the possibility of incarceration.”
