Caroline Dubois was winning against Jessica Camara when an accidental head clash led to a controversial technical draw.
Dubois was brutally dismantling Camara, showcasing her skills and power throughout the fight, but ultimately came away with a decision that left her feeling unsatisfied. The clash of heads occurred in the midst of what looked like an assured victory for Dubois, who retained the WBC lightweight world championship. Despite being denied a clear win, she would likely consider this performance a victory in all but name.
This bout marked Dubois’ first defense of the lightweight title after her elevation from Interim to full champion. From the very first bell, she displayed the qualities of a consummate champion. The southpaw from London attacked Camara with ruthless efficiency, establishing her jab early on and following up with a vicious straight one-two that floored Camara early in the fight.
As the fight progressed, Dubois unleashed vicious left hooks and a steady barrage of punches, aggressively pursuing an early finish. Camara, on the other hand, had no choice but to keep her guard high and tight, desperately trying to fend off Dubois’ powerful strikes. Yet, despite her best efforts, Dubois continued to penetrate Camara’s defense, landing her backhand left with precision.
Throughout the second round, Dubois maintained relentless pressure on her opponent. Camara appeared to be in distress, her face marked up with visible damage, including a badly broken nose and a serious cut. Before the third round could commence, referee Kieran McCann called a time-out to allow the ringside doctor to assess Camara’s condition. Unfortunately for the Canadian, the doctor determined she could not continue. However, due to the referee’s ruling that the injury was caused by an accidental clash of heads, the contest was recorded as a technical draw instead of a definitive win for Dubois.
Although Dubois dominated the match for as long as it lasted, the technical draw meant she wouldn’t officially claim victory. Regardless, she retained her WBC world championship, a significant consolation. After the fight, Dubois made her feelings clear: “I don’t think she wanted it. I hit her with a straight right and knocked her down in the first round,” she reflected.
“I saw her right eye was swelling up and that was from a punch,” Dubois continued, analyzing her performance with keen insight. “With the cut, the blood wasn’t coming in her face, it was coming around the side of her face. I’m punching her, and maybe it’s splattering on her face. She didn’t want it, man. It was getting stopped by the doctor or I was stopping it.”
Dubois not only demonstrated her physical prowess but also her mental fortitude inside the ring. The night may not have ended with a trophy but it certainly showcased her determination, skill, and the promise of future triumphs in her boxing career.
