Official: Gerard Martin Signs New Deal with FC Barcelona Until 2028

Barcelona left-back Gerard Martin has officially signed a new long-term contract with the club, marking an important milestone in his burgeoning career. The 22-year-old player has participated in 18 matches across all competitions this season, primarily providing backup for Alejandro Balde in the left-back position. Though Martin has yet to fully convince on the first-team stage, his contributions have evidently been substantial enough for the Catalan club to offer him this significant contract extension.

The new agreement will see Martin remain with Barcelona until 2028, and it is reported that the contract includes a noteworthy release clause set at €100 million. This reflects not only the club’s confidence in his abilities but also their strategic approach to securing young talent for the future, underlining the investment in both the player and the overall squad.

In an official announcement from FC Barcelona, it was stated: “FC Barcelona and player Gerard Martín have reached an agreement to renew his contract, which will tie him to the Club until June 30, 2028.” The signing ceremony took place at the club’s headquarters and was attended by key figures such as club president Joan Laporta, Youth Football Director Joan Soler, Sporting Director Anderson Luis de Souza—commonly known as Deco—and José Ramon Alexanco, who oversees Youth Football.

This extension for Martin comes alongside the club’s announcement of Ronald Araujo’s contract renewal, signaling a broader trend within Barcelona as they prioritize contract extensions for their current roster over seeking new signings in the upcoming January transfer window. Deco, the sporting director, has emphasized that retaining and securing talent is crucial for the club’s long-term success, particularly as they look to build a strong foundation with their younger players.

Martin’s new deal not only cements his position within the club but also includes improved financial terms. Although the official statement has not confirmed the exact figure of the release clause, the €100 million speculated amount illustrates the high expectations placed on him as he continues to develop his skills and on-field contributions.

Throughout this season, Martin has successfully established himself as a reliable option behind Alejandro Balde in Hansi Flick’s tactical setup, particularly following his impressive performances during the pre-season. The left-back joined Barcelona in 2023 from UE Cornella and spent his last season developing his craft with Barça Atletic. In the current term, he has made 18 senior appearances, during which he has notably recorded two assists, showcasing his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.

At the moment, Martin will continue to be listed with the reserve team and does not yet hold a designated first-team number. This arrangement allows him to gain valuable experience and training alongside senior players while honing his skills in competitive settings without the immediate pressures of the first team. The coaching staff will closely monitor his progress, as there is anticipated openness to integrate him into the first team when the opportunity arises, thereby enriching his development and readiness for upcoming challenges on the pitch.
