Simona Halep has announced her retirement from professional tennis following a disappointing start to her 2025 season. The former world No. 1 faced a challenging match at the Transylvania Open in her home country of Romania, where she was handed a wild card to compete. Despite her illustrious background as a two-time Grand Slam champion, Halep struggled significantly in her first match, winning just two games as Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti dominated the court with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory that lasted only 59 minutes.
In an emotional on-court interview immediately following the match, Halep shared her mixed feelings about her retirement. “Tonight, I don’t know if it’s with joy or sadness,” she expressed, acknowledging the complex emotions that overwhelmed her in that moment. “I think both feelings are trying me, but I’m making this decision with my soul.” This candid admission highlights the internal struggle she faced as she reflected on her career in professional tennis.
Halep underscored her realism regarding her situation, stating, “I’ve always been realistic with myself and with my body.” Recognizing the physical toll that the sport has taken on her, she conveyed the understanding that the level of performance required to compete effectively at the highest level was becoming increasingly difficult for her to achieve. “Where I probably was, it’s very hard to get there and I know what it means to get there,” she said, reinforcing her decision to step away from the sport that brought her both triumph and pride.
Making a heartfelt connection with her supporters, Halep expressed her gratitude for their presence at the event in Cluj. “That’s why I wanted to come here today in Cluj to play in front of you and say goodbye,” she stated, demonstrating her commitment to acknowledge and honor her fans even amidst a lackluster performance. Despite the outcome, she reflected on her career with warmth, saying, “Even though my performance wasn’t very good, it was still my soul, and I’m very glad you came.”
Though the decision to retire is a tough one, Halep chose to approach it with positivity. “It’s a beautiful thing. I became world No. 1, I won Grand Slams; it’s all I wanted. Life goes on; there is life after tennis,” she affirmed, suggesting that she looks forward to what lies ahead. She expressed hope for future interactions with her fans, saying, “I hope that we will see each other again.”
Halep is also determined to remain involved in tennis in some capacity, stating, “I’ll come to the tennis here as often as I can, and of course, I will continue to play; but to be competitive, it requires much more, and at this moment, it is no longer.”
Halepβs retirement follows a tumultuous period in her career, including a four-year doping ban that was eventually reduced to nine months due to the unfortunate circumstances of a contaminated supplement. Her last competitive match on the WTA Tour occurred in October 2023 in Hong Kong, and while she participated in an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi in December, she ultimately withdrew from the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open due to persistent pain in her knee and shoulder. As she closes this chapter, fans and fellow players alike will remember her contributions and achievements in the world of tennis with great respect and admiration.
