Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced that defender Radu Dragusin has suffered a serious Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury. The injury was sustained during Spurs’ Europa League match against Elfsborg, where the young centre-back was brought on as a substitute at half-time. Unfortunately, Dragusin landed awkwardly while attempting to clear the ball, leading to severe damage to his right knee.
Following thorough medical examinations, it was determined that the injury was significant enough to necessitate immediate surgical intervention. As a result, Dragusin will be undergoing surgery shortly, and a further assessment will be conducted by Tottenham’s medical team to evaluate his recovery timeline and when he might be able to return to training. The club shared their support for the player in their official statement, saying, “We can confirm that Radu Dragusin will undergo surgery for an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury to his right knee. Radu will be assessed by our medical team to determine when he can return to training. We’re all with you, Radu.”
At just 21 years old, Dragusin’s injury is a considerable blow for Tottenham, especially given the ongoing injury struggles the team is facing. This season, the club has been contending with multiple defensive injuries, leaving manager Ange Postecoglou in a tricky situation with limited options. In their recent 2-0 victory over Brentford, for instance, Spurs had to rely on players like Ben Davies and Archie Gray to step in as emergency defenders due to the absence of a recognized centre-half. This situation has highlighted Tottenham’s defensive vulnerabilities, particularly as key players like Cristian Romero are still recovering from a thigh injury and Micky van de Ven is only just returning from a long-term hamstring issue.
In light of Dragusin’s injury and the overall defensive crisis, Tottenham made a last-minute attempt to reinforce their squad ahead of the transfer deadline. They reportedly submitted a bid for Maxime Esteve, a defender from Championship side Burnley, with an offer of £20 million ($25 million). However, this bid was promptly rejected, as Burnley values Esteve at no less than £30 million ($37 million). Nevertheless, Tottenham managed to secure a deal for Kevin Danso from Lens for £20.9 million ($21 million), aiming to strengthen their defensive line as they navigate a challenging period.
Looking ahead, there is cautious optimism regarding Micky van de Ven’s potential availability for Tottenham’s upcoming match against Liverpool in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Anfield. The team remains hopeful that his presence could help shore up the backline as they aim for silverware in the cup competitions. Despite this, the aspirations for a top-four finish in the Premier League appear increasingly distant, with Tottenham currently positioned in 14th place in the standings. The club’s management and supporters will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the situation as they work through this challenging spell in the season.
