The former Manchester United and Barcelona star, Memphis Depay, has recently received a suspended prison sentence lasting four months due to a serious driving incident. This situation took place last August when Depay was enjoying a vacation in Monaco. During his holiday, he attended two nightclubs and, after a night of festivities, made the poor choice to operate his luxurious Rolls Royce vehicle.
In the early hours of the morning, local law enforcement pulled him over due to dangerous driving behavior. Following the stop, police conducted a breathalyser test, and the results indicated that his blood alcohol level was 1.01 millilitres, which significantly surpassed the legal limit enforced in Monaco. As a result of these violations, a Monaco court imposed a four-month suspended prison sentence on Depay. In addition, he was fined €9,000 (approximately £7,500) and received a two-year ban on driving within the principality.
The 30-year-old professional footballer now plays for the Brazilian club Corinthians after being released from Atletico Madrid in the previous summer. Upon receiving the court’s verdict, Depay took to his Instagram account to publicly apologize for his actions. “I would like to apologise here. Last summer, during my vacation in Monaco, I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having a drink in a restaurant. I should have gotten into a taxi instead, but I didn’t. In 2025, we will do better,” he stated. His apology reflects an awareness of the consequences of his decisions, emphasizing the importance of making responsible choices, especially regarding driving under the influence.
Memphis Depay’s name is familiar to many fans of Manchester United, as he played for the team between 2015 and 2017. He was signed by Louis van Gaal, who had previously coached him to help the Netherlands secure a third-place finish at the 2014 World Cup. However, his stint at Manchester United was fraught with difficulties; he managed to net only seven goals in 53 appearances during his time there, ultimately leading to his departure to Lyon after two years.
Despite the struggles he faced personally during his time at United, Depay still contributed to the team’s success, winning the FA Cup, the Europa League, and the League Cup. Following his chapter in English football, he continued his career in Spain with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid before moving to Brazil in September.
