Rodriguez of Las Palmas Announces Relapse of Cancer

Kirian Rodriguez, the captain of Spanish football club Las Palmas, has announced that he will be unavailable for the remainder of the current season due to a relapse of cancer. The 28-year-old midfielder, who has shown incredible resilience and strength over the past years, previously faced a significant health battle after he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2022. This serious condition affects the lymphatic system, which is a critical component of the body’s immune response, fighting off diseases and infections.

Rodriguez shared the difficult news with his supporters, stating, “Yesterday I was informed that I have relapsed with cancer.” He expressed his disappointment about needing to step away from the pitch once more, undergoing another round of chemotherapy in his fight against this relentless disease. “I will have to stop playing again and go through another round of chemotherapy to fight the disease,” he mentioned. However, he remains hopeful, expressing a desire to return and contribute to his team, hoping to “see them all again in 2025/26.”

His journey has been a tough one; after his initial diagnosis at the age of 26, Rodriguez underwent six intensive sessions of chemotherapy. He completed this round of treatment in November 2022 and was finally given the all-clear by January 2023. The determination and spirit he displayed during his recovery and return to the sport have been inspiring for fans and teammates alike. In April 2023, he made a triumphant return to action with Las Palmas, quickly becoming an integral part of the squad.

This season, Rodriguez has already appeared in 21 of Las Palmas’ 22 La Liga fixtures, showcasing his skills and leadership on the field. Currently, the club finds itself in 15th place within the league table, just two points above the relegation zone. His absence will undoubtedly be felt, as his contributions both on and off the pitch have helped to guide the team through challenging moments. As he prepares to face this new chapter in his health journey, the Las Palmas community rallies behind their captain, wishing him strength and a successful recovery.
