The NFL is set to make its return to Brazil during the first week of the 2025 season, featuring the Los Angeles Chargers as the host team at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo on September 5, just after the season kickoff. The identity of the Chargers’ opponents will be disclosed at a later date.
The Corinthians Arena, a prominent venue in Brazil, previously hosted the historic NFL game in September 2024, where the Philadelphia Eagles triumphed over the Green Bay Packers with a score of 34-29. This matchup marked a significant milestone as it was the first NFL game played in South America, highlighting the growing interest and fanbase for American football in the region.
“After a successful and memorable first game in Brazil in 2024, we are delighted to confirm the league’s return to São Paulo with the Los Angeles Chargers as the designated team in what will be an incredible next chapter in the market,” said NFL Brazil general manager Luis Martinez. His statement reflects the league’s commitment to expanding its international presence and engaging with its global fanbase.
The NFL currently has the capacity to schedule up to eight league-operated regular-season games internationally. As part of this initiative, the league has already announced plans for three games in London as well as one game each in Berlin, Madrid, and Dublin. This demonstrates the NFL’s strategy to not only enhance its global reach but also to provide fans around the world with the opportunity to experience the excitement of American football.
In addition to hosting the NFL’s inaugural regular-season game in South America last year, the Corinthians Arena has a rich history as it previously was an official venue for both football’s 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. This reputation as a high-profile event location adds to the allure of the NFL’s return to Brazil.
Furthermore, the league has set its sights on Australia, already announcing plans to hold its first game there in 2026. This expansion into diverse markets underscores the NFL’s dedication to growing the sport internationally and cultivating a culture of American football in various regions around the globe.
