Oscar Piastri: McLaren Driver Signs New Contract Extension Until 2028

Oscar Piastri has officially extended his contract with McLaren, signifying a significant commitment as the Formula 1 season approaches. This new agreement will keep Piastri with the McLaren team until at least the end of 2028, building upon his existing contract that was due to expire in 2026.

Starting his journey with McLaren in 2023, Piastri quickly established himself as a key asset for the team after joining them the previous year. The confirmation of this contract extension comes at a crucial time, right before the much-anticipated opening race of the season at the Australian Grand Prix. Notably, Piastri will continue to partner with Lando Norris, as both drivers will now be teammates for an additional three years, aligning with Norris’ contract, which runs until the end of 2027. This stability in the driver lineup is important as McLaren looks to solidify its presence in the highly competitive world of Formula 1.

In expressing his excitement about the extension, Piastri shared his enthusiasm for being part of McLaren’s long-term plans. He remarked, “It’s a fantastic feeling to know that I am deeply integrated into McLaren’s future goals.” He acknowledged the confidence the team showed in him from the moment he signed in 2022, emphasizing the incredible journey they have undertaken together during the past two seasons. “It has been fulfilling to work towards re-establishing McLaren’s prestigious position in motorsport,” he shared.

Piastri also expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the talented individuals at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC), crediting them for aiding his rapid development as a Formula 1 winner at such an early stage in his career. The young driver expressed pride in his association with the legendary team, indicating his eagerness to strive for significant victories, especially in light of last year’s impressive results that have fueled his ambition to remain at the forefront of the sport.

As he embarks on the new season, Piastri’s achievements in Formula 1 already include two race victories—the Hungarian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix from the previous season—positioning him as one of the favorites for the championship title this year. With McLaren poised to deliver a competitive car, the prospects look promising for both Piastri and his team.

Zak Brown, the chief executive of McLaren, expressed his delight at Piastri’s contract extension, noting not only the young driver’s exceptional talent but also his remarkable work ethic and fit within the team culture. According to Brown, extending Piastri’s contract was a clear decision, as he believes they possess “the best driver line-up on the grid.” He reflected on how integral Piastri has been to the team’s success over the last two seasons, highlighting his contributions that have added to McLaren’s legacy and celebrating their victory in the Constructors’ Championship last season.

As they look towards the future, both McLaren and Piastri are keen to continue their pursuit of World Championships together, fostering a shared ambition that drives the team forward. The relationship between Piastri and Norris has shown signs of camaraderie, although not without moments of tension. A noteworthy incident at the Hungarian Grand Prix illustrated this dynamic, where Norris was instructed to allow Piastri to pass in the latter laps of the race, ultimately leading to Piastri celebrating his first Formula 1 victory.

Additionally, during the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Piastri executed a bold move to pass Norris early on, which led to drama as both drivers contended for positions. Although this maneuver resulted in Norris losing ground to Charles Leclerc, who went on to win the race, it displayed the competitive spirit within the team. Following this event, McLaren decided to prioritize Norris for the remainder of the season due to his standings in the Drivers’ Championship. However, their partnership shone brightly at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Norris strategically slowed Sergio Perez to assist Piastri in securing yet another triumph.

As the new season begins, the partnership between Piastri and Norris is expected to play a crucial role in McLaren’s quest for success. Both drivers are set to leverage their skills and teamwork to further elevate the team’s status in the competitive landscape of Formula 1, aiming for a fruitful and victorious season ahead. With Piastri’s contract extension, McLaren reinforces its commitment to building a strong team atmosphere and pursuing excellence in every race.
