Lando Norris wins the Australian GP, edging out Max Verstappen in wet conditions, while Lewis Hamilton finishes 10th in his Ferrari debut

Lando Norris from McLaren has taken the lead in the Formula 1 World Championship for the very first time following a thrilling and dramatic victory in the rain-soaked season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Although his teammate, Oscar Piastri, struggled and finished in ninth place after a costly late spin, Norris managed to hold off challenges from reigning world champion Max Verstappen to secure the win. Lewis Hamilton, making his debut with Ferrari, had a tough time and finished in 10th place after the team’s risky tire strategy didn’t pay off.

Norris, regarded as the pre-season favorite for the championship, showcased exceptional driving skills by leading the majority of the race on the 58-lap course amidst challenging weather conditions at Albert Park. The race was characterized by intermittent rain and several incidents that added to the chaos. Despite appearing to secure his victory, Norris faced pressure from Verstappen, especially when the rain returned for the final 15 laps, leading to further unpredictability.

Both McLaren drivers faced slip-ups in the last sector of the race. While Norris adeptly maneuvered through the next turn and quickly pitted for intermediate tires, Piastri unfortunately spun into the grass, dropping him to the back of the grid. Piastri’s attempt to perform well in front of his home crowd was cut short, resulting in a ninth-place finish. Meanwhile, Verstappen also faced difficulties, losing significant ground as he struggled to keep pace with the McLarens during parts of the race.

Verstappen, who had previously taken an early lead after overtaking Piastri on lap one, found himself momentarily leading when the rain intensified, but soon pitted for intermediates as conditions worsened. After a subsequent Safety Car intervention, he attempted to close the gap, finishing closely behind Norris but unable to overtake him. This marked a significant moment as it ended Verstappen’s exceptional run at the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings, which had lasted since mid-2022.

Mercedes’ George Russell had a surprising finish, taking the third spot on the podium despite the odds against him during the initial stages of the race. His rookie teammate, Kimi Antonelli, made an impressive comeback after struggling in qualifying, initially crossing the line in fourth. However, a five-second penalty for an unsafe release in the pits dropped him to fifth after a review of the incident went in their favor post-race, reaffirming Antonelli’s strong performance.

In contrast, Hamilton faced a challenging first race with Ferrari, finishing with a solitary point while navigating a race largely shaped by communication issues with his race engineer Riccardo Adami. At one point, he found himself leading as pit strategies unfolded, but his gamble to stay on slick tires backfired as conditions worsened, leading to a late call to switch to intermediates. He ultimately lost ground, finishing in 10th place after being overtaken by Charles Leclerc and Piastri in the final laps.

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll achieved a commendable sixth-place finish, marking his return to form with the team’s first points since July. Nico Hulkenberg delivered an unexpected seventh place on his second debut with Sauber, a significant improvement for the team after struggling last season.

For many of the rookie drivers, including Isack Hadjar, Jack Doohan, and Gabriel Bortoleto, the race proved to be a steep learning curve—experiencing crashes and spins that marred their debut outings. Meanwhile, Norris had set the initial pace by opting for intermediate tires after the race’s start, gradually building a lead despite pressure from both Verstappen and Piastri.

The race’s early stages were marked by the unpredictability of the weather and the track conditions, and it became evident how crucial strategic decisions would be for all teams. Norris and McLaren managed to navigate these challenges effectively, highlighting their strong start to the season as they looked ahead to the forthcoming challenges of the championship.
