Former Formula 1 team owner Eddie Jordan has sadly passed away at the age of 76. He was the driving force behind the Jordan Grand Prix, which competed in F1 for 15 seasons from 1991 to 2005, clinching a total of four race victories. Recently, he had taken an active role in overseeing the transfer of renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey from Red Bull Racing to Aston Martin. Additionally, Jordan led a consortium that successfully rescued the rugby union club London Irish from administration, highlighting his diverse interests beyond motor racing.
In a heartfelt statement released Thursday, Jordan’s family shared the news of his passing, revealing that he died peacefully in Cape Town during the early hours of March 20, 2025, with family by his side. They expressed their deep sorrow, saying, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE, the notable ex-Formula 1 team owner, television pundit, and entrepreneur.”
The family fondly remembered Jordan’s remarkable charisma and energy, stating, “EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy, and Irish charm everywhere he went. His absence leaves a tremendous void, but we will cherish countless joyous memories that will help us navigate through this difficult time.”
Eddie Jordan’s influence extended well beyond his tenure as an F1 team owner. After stepping away from direct competition, he became a familiar face in the world of motorsports, contributing as a broadcaster for both the BBC and Channel 4. His legacy in the sport was further solidified by his management of Adrian Newey, a visionary designer whose contributions have been pivotal in F1’s history.
F1 president Stefano Domenicali expressed the collective grief felt within the motorsport community, stating, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the sudden loss of Eddie Jordan. With his inexhaustible energy, he had a unique ability to bring smiles to faces, all while remaining genuine and brilliant.”
Furthermore, Domenicali noted Jordan’s significance in shaping an era of Formula 1, adding, “Eddie has been a protagonist of an era of F1 and he will be deeply missed. In this moment of sorrow, my thoughts and those of the entire Formula 1 family are with his family and loved ones.”
The current iteration of the Aston Martin team traces its roots back to the original Jordan team established in 1991. Over the years, it transformed through various identities, including Spyker, Force India, and Racing Point, while always maintaining a base in Silverstone.
Andy Cowell, the principal of Aston Martin, paid tribute to Jordan’s indelible impact on the sport, stating, “Eddie Jordan was one of the all-time motorsport greats. He was a one-of-a-kind individual, a wonderful human being, and a charismatic leader who founded this team and brought it into F1 in 1991. His vision laid the groundwork for our success, and he leaves a lasting legacy for the entire motorsport community. Today, we honor a true legend of the sport, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues.”
