Kylian Mbappé’s legal representatives held a press conference on Thursday, where they unveiled a series of appeals aimed at resolving his ongoing conflict with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Currently playing for Real Madrid, Mbappé is pursuing a significant amount of €55 million, which he contends is owed to him by the French football club.
The forward’s attempts to reclaim this substantial sum have recently faced various hurdles. A source familiar with the intricacies of the case relayed to Agence France-Presse in February that a commission had deemed Mbappé’s request “inadmissible,” effectively putting a damper on his endeavors to collect the owed amount. This setback marks a critical moment in the legal proceedings, as it suggests that the path to recovery may be fraught with complications.
Compounding these difficulties, a recent ruling upheld an earlier decision made on December 11 by the disciplinary officials of the Professional Football League (LFP), who similarly rejected Mbappé’s claim as inadmissible. The implications of these rulings are significant, as they not only thwart his immediate financial aspirations but also place him in a precarious position in relation to his former club’s financial dealings. In a bid to assert their position, PSG has taken the initiative to bring the situation to the Paris judicial court, disputing two previous rulings that had been in favor of Mbappé and endeavoring to overturn them.
Further complicating the scenario, the French Football Federation’s higher appeals commission convened on January 30. However, they chose not to hear arguments from either party involved in this dispute. Consequently, on February 11, they reaffirmed that Mbappé’s request remained inadmissible, adding yet another barrier to his quest for financial restitution. The officials of the FFF echoed the sentiments of the LFP, concluding that PSG would not face any disciplinary actions due to the existing legal processes unfolding in the Paris court.
One of Mbappe’s lawyers shared more details on BFMTV. Here’s what he had to say:
“The €55 million simply corresponds to the unpaid salaries and bonuses owed to Kylian Mbappe for the final year of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. At the start of the 2023-2024 season, he informed the club that he would not be triggering the optional one-year extension.”
“In an effort to change his mind, the club sidelined him. For more than 20 days, they put pressure on him to sign an extension, which he ultimately refused. He was eventually allowed back on the pitch and honored his contract through the rest of the season—scoring goals and doing his job as best he could until June 30, 2024.”
“But along the way, the club stopped paying his salary. His wages for April, May, and June were never paid, and a bonus due to him in February 2024 was also withheld. Altogether, the unpaid amount totals €55 million gross.”
