Julen Lopetegui has officially taken on the role of head coach for the Qatar national football team, just under four months after he was dismissed from his position at West Ham United. This milestone in the career of the seasoned 58-year-old Spaniard adds another chapter to his extensive coaching resume, which features notable experiences across various levels of professional football.
Lopetegui’s contract with the Qatar Football Association is set to run until 2027, encompassing the critical ongoing qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. His arrival comes at a crucial time for the Qatari national team, who, despite hosting the last World Cup and showcasing their nation on the global stage, faced a disappointing fate as they failed to advance to the upcoming tournament during the initial rounds of qualification. Before this latest appointment, Lopetegui had a notable tenure in international football when he managed Spain. In November 2022, he moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers but ultimately left the club in the following summer after facing challenges throughout his tenure.
Most recently, Lopetegui took charge of West Ham United at the beginning of the current season, yet this tenure was also fraught with difficulties. After six months at the helm, where the team managed to secure only six wins in league play, his contract was terminated, leading to the appointment of Graham Potter in his place.
