Official: Ousmane Dembele wins the Ligue 1 Player of the Season

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele achieved a significant milestone by being named the Ligue 1 Player of the Year on Sunday, following his instrumental role in guiding the club to its 13th French title and a spot in the Champions League final. This accolade is a testament to his exceptional skills and contributions throughout the season, as he has emerged as a key player for PSG.

Dembele has excelled in his role, finishing the season as the top scorer in Ligue 1 with an outstanding 21 goals. Moreover, he has made a substantial impact across all competitions, finding the back of the net 33 times in 46 matches. This includes eight vital goals in European tournaments, highlighting his ability to perform on the biggest stages and solidifying his status as one of the premier forwards in Europe.

The recognition of Dembele as the Player of the Year signifies a notable shift within the team’s dynamics, especially after the departure of Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe, a household name in football, won the prize five times consecutively before moving to Real Madrid at the conclusion of the last season. This transition not only illustrates the evolution of the squad but also emphasizes Dembele’s rising stature and the new leadership qualities he brings to the forefront.

In addition to Dembele’s individual honors, Luis Enrique was celebrated with the Coach of the Year award at the UNFP (French players’ union) Trophies gala. Under his expert management, the team has showcased remarkable growth and tenacity throughout the season. Meanwhile, Desire Doue earned recognition as the Best Young Player in Ligue 1, further indicating the wealth of talent emerging in French football.

Nonetheless, Lille’s Lucas Chevalier prevented PSG from sweeping all the major awards, as he clinched the best goalkeeper accolade, winning it over Gianluigi Donnarumma. Chevalier’s outstanding performances throughout the season have been crucial for Lille, demonstrating the fierce competition that exists in Ligue 1.

PSG is now on the brink of achieving a treble, following their recent success in securing the Ligue 1 title—marking 11 championships in just 13 years. The club’s current form has raised high hopes and expectations as they prepare for their monumental clash against Inter Milan in the Champions League final scheduled for May 31st. This crucial match, paired with their upcoming encounter against Reims in the French Cup final the week prior, could potentially culminate in one of the most successful seasons in PSG’s illustrious history, setting the stage for unforgettable achievements in both domestic and European competitions.
