Rangers Football Club has officially confirmed that Barry Ferguson will not continue as the head coach after serving as interim boss since February. In his short tenure, Ferguson managed the team through 15 matches, securing six wins, with the most recent result being a 2-2 draw against Hibernian, which marked his final game in charge of the squad. Despite the challenges he faced, including navigating an impending takeover by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, Ferguson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the team, stating that it was an “enormous honour.”
Reflecting on his time as interim head coach, Ferguson remarked, “I’ve already lived the dream as a player and as captain of Rangers, and to do so as head coach in these last three months has been an enormous honour for me.” He acknowledged the ups and downs that came with the role but emphasized his commitment to the club. Ferguson concluded with a heartfelt message, stating, “I wish whomever becomes the new manager every success in the job,” demonstrating his enduring support for Rangers, where he will continue to serve in the role of ambassador.
Meanwhile, the search for a new head coach is ongoing, with Rangers’ chief executive Patrick Stewart indicating that the process is “progressing well.” He expressed optimism about concluding the search in the near future. The club is reportedly considering several candidates to fill the head coach position. Among those being discussed are Davide Ancelotti, the son of renowned coach Carlo Ancelotti, and Danny Rohl, the current Sheffield Wednesday manager, who has caught the attention of many clubs due to his impressive performance.
Rob Edwards, who has been available since leaving Luton Town earlier this year, and Russell Martin, a former Rangers player who has managed Southampton, Swansea, and MK Dons, are also in the mix as potential candidates. Additionally, there have been discussions regarding former manager Steven Gerrard, along with Gary O’Neil, who previously managed Bournemouth and Wolves and has been seeking a new opportunity since December 2024. As Rangers navigates these changes, fans will undoubtedly be eager to see who will take the helm next and lead the team into the future.
