A man has been apprehended following a car accident involving pedestrians in Liverpool city center during the city’s Premier League trophy parade. Authorities are treating this as an isolated incident and do not classify it as a terrorist act.
According to reports from Merseyside Police, a 53-year-old white British man has been taken into custody after the vehicle struck pedestrians amidst the celebratory atmosphere of Liverpool’s trophy parade, which has left four individuals in serious condition in the hospital.
A total of twenty-seven people required medical attention and were transported to local hospitals. Steve Rotheram, the Metro Mayor of Liverpool City, stated that four people remain in critical condition, emphasizing the lasting impact of the incident on the victims and their families. “This terrible event on Water Street will undoubtedly haunt those affected for years to come, and our focus must be on supporting them during this difficult time,” Rotheram expressed in a statement to BBC Radio 5 Live.
In addition to the critically injured, twenty other individuals who received treatment at the scene did not need to be hospitalized. Remarkably, a paramedic on a bicycle was also struck by the vehicle but fortunately did not suffer significant injuries.
The incident unfolded shortly after 6 PM on Monday, prompting a rapid response from emergency services to Water Street. Firefighters were able to free four individuals, including a child, who had become trapped under the vehicle.
Authorities indicated that the car was stationary at the site, and the individual arrested is believed to have been operating the vehicle. There are growing concerns regarding how the car managed to get so close to the parade, with Mayor Rotheram noting that Water Street was designated as a blocked-off area to ensure pedestrian safety. He expressed surprise at the breach, stating, “This area was supposed to be vehicle-free; it was packed with hundreds of thousands of attendees celebrating.”
Merseyside Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims reinforced that the investigation is not connected to terrorism and is an isolated case, alleviating fears of a broader threat. During a press conference, she extended her thoughts and prayers to those impacted by the tragic event, commending the immediate response from first responders and bystanders who assisted the injured.
With the parade initially creating a festive mood throughout the city, Sims sadly noted, βAs the celebration concluded around 6 PM, reports surfaced of a vehicle colliding with multiple pedestrians on Water Street, resulting in numerous injuries.”
She did urge the public to avoid circulating disturbing videos of the incident online, instead encouraging individuals to send any footage or information directly to the police, ensuring that it is properly investigated. Affected community members are reminded that security measures, including a comprehensive traffic management strategy, had been implemented in collaboration with parade organizers, reinforcing the city’s dedication to ensuring public safety during large-scale events.
