Gianluigi Donnarumma has signed with Man City for £26m from Paris Saint-Germain as Ederson transfers to Fenerbahce

Gianluigi Donnarumma has officially joined Manchester City from Paris Saint-Germain in a significant transfer deal worth £26 million. This move comes on the heels of Ederson’s departure to Fenerbahce for approximately £12 million, as Manchester City aims to retool their roster for the upcoming challenges.

The 26-year-old Italian shot-stopper has signed a contract with the Premier League champions that runs for five years, with the added option for an additional year. This contract solidifies his position as the new first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester City, who have had a busy summer transfer window. With Donnarumma’s arrival, he becomes the club’s seventh and final signing of the summer, bringing their total expenditure to an impressive £185.8 million.

Donnarumma, who will don the No 99 jersey, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to play for Manchester City, stating, “To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me.” He highlighted the world-class talents within the squad and praised Pep Guardiola as one of the greatest managers in football history. Donnarumma’s long-standing admiration for the club was evident as he reflected on his journey, mentioning that “this is a club every player in world football would love to join.”

He voiced eagerness to meet his new teammates, staff members, and fans, emphasizing that “playing at the Etihad Stadium will be very, very special” for him. Donnarumma’s commitment to the team was clear when he stated, “I am very excited for what lies ahead and can promise that I will give absolutely everything to try and help the club achieve even more success.”

On the other hand, Ederson’s move to Fenerbahce marks the end of a remarkable era at Manchester City for the Brazilian keeper. After spending eight years at the club, he achieved tremendous success, winning 18 major honors under Guardiola’s stewardship. His accolades include six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and a coveted Champions League title. Throughout his career at City, Ederson made 372 appearances and kept an impressive 168 clean sheets, earning the Golden Glove award three times.

In his farewell message, Ederson expressed pride in his achievements with the club, saying, “I leave incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, and I am honoured to have worn the shirt so many times.” He credited Guardiola for instilling a winning mentality in the team and reflected on the incredible journey he has had since arriving in Manchester, stating, “Playing for City has been the most special time of my life, and I will always be a fan of this special club.”

As for Manchester City’s current squad, James Trafford, another summer recruit from Burnley, has started every league match so far this season. However, it is widely anticipated that Donnarumma will step in as the new number one goalkeeper, emphasizing the shifting dynamics within the team.

Donnarumma, who was previously left out of Luis Enrique’s PSG lineup for their European Super Cup victory against Tottenham Hotspur in August, had a stellar season before his transfer, having helped secure the Champions League title for PSG. Since his arrival from AC Milan in 2021, he has made a total of 161 appearances for the Parisian club, achieving a notable 56 clean sheets throughout his time there.

With these changes, Manchester City aims to maintain its dominance in domestic and European competitions, and fans will undoubtedly be eager to see how Donnarumma’s presence will influence the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
