The opening ceremony of the Ryder Cup 2025 has been postponed due to thunderstorms as bad weather is anticipated to affect preparations at Bethpage Black

The Ryder Cup opening ceremony, a highly anticipated event in the world of golf, has undergone a significant scheduling alteration. It is now set to take place at 4pm local time (or 9pm UK time) on Wednesday afternoon at the iconic Bethpage Black course. The live broadcast will be available on Sky Sports Golf. This change comes as a response to ominous weather forecasts predicting thunderstorms on Thursday, which would have severely impacted the ceremony and surrounding festivities.

Traditionally, the opening ceremony is held on the Thursday afternoon of Ryder Cup week, serving as a prelude to the biennial competition that commences the following morning. However, due to escalating concerns regarding the inclement weather, the PGA of America made the decision to shift the event ahead by a full 24 hours. This proactive measure aims to sidestep potential disruption caused by rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms that are expected on Thursday.

In a statement released by the PGA, it was confirmed that the ceremony’s pre-show will kick off at 3pm (8pm UK time), leading into the main event at 4pm. Moreover, Ryder Cup+ ticket holders who were scheduled to attend on Thursday will now have the opportunity to participate on both Wednesday and Thursday, ensuring they do not miss out on the excitement.

In an interesting twist, US captain Keegan Bradley and European Captain Luke Donald are slated to unveil their pairings for the opening foursomes session during a joint press conference on Thursday afternoon. This event will still proceed as originally planned, with pairings scheduled to be announced at 4pm (9pm UK time) on Thursday at a yet-to-be-determined location.

As for the Junior Ryder Cup, the timetable remains unaffected. The concluding singles matches will commence on Thursday at 7:30am local time (12:30pm BST), adhering to the initial schedule.

The meteorological report provided by the on-site meteorologist indicates a brief lull in activity expected between late morning and early afternoon on Wednesday. However, weather conditions may worsen later in the day, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms anticipated after 2pm. Rainfall is predicted to increase significantly overnight into Thursday, alongside a chance of scattered thunderstorms that could generate wind gusts reaching 35-45 mph.

The forecast reveals a possibility of rain across each of the three event days. Nonetheless, there are indications of improving weather conditions over the weekend, which is hopeful news for Team Europe as they aim to reclaim the trophy and secure their first victory away from home since the renowned 2012 ‘Miracle at Medinah’. The meteorologist’s insights further suggest that instability in weather patterns should lessen by midday Friday, leading to a decrease in the frequency and intensity of showers, thus allowing for a more pleasant golfing experience as the weekend unfolds.
