The Philadelphia Eagles experienced a disappointing 34-17 defeat against the New York Giants, marking their second consecutive loss of the season. This setback came on the heels of a defeat to the Denver Broncos in Week Five, raising concerns about the Eagles’ rhythm as they head into upcoming challenges. Fans are encouraged to catch the next match as the Denver Broncos take on the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday at 2:30 PM.
In a standout performance, rookie Cam Skattebo was a dominant force for the Giants, rushing for three touchdowns to help propel his team to the surprising victory over the defending Super Bowl champions. Together with fellow rookie Jaxson Dart, Skattebo’s contributions were pivotal in this primetime matchup on Thursday night. He demonstrated his power by bulldozing into the end zone from four yards out and scoring twice from the one-yard line. Dart showcased his mobility and agility with a 20-yard touchdown run, and he also connected with Wan’Dale Robinson for a significant 35-yard touchdown catch-and-run. This victory was especially sweet for the Giants, who had previously struggled with turnovers, as both rookies had fumbled in a turnover-heavy loss against New Orleans just days earlier.
Dart finished the game impressively, completing 17 of 25 passes for 195 yards while also contributing on the ground with 58 rushing yards from 13 carries. Despite taking a big hit that led to a concussion test, his resilience was evident throughout the game. Meanwhile, Skattebo rushed for a career-high 98 yards on 19 attempts, cementing his status as a key player for the Giants this season.
Defensively, the Giants stepped up by sacking Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts three times and forcing an interception. Defensive standout Brian Burns recorded two sacks, tying him for the NFL lead in sacks this season with a total of seven. Hurts had a few missed opportunities, including a notable overthrow to a wide-open DeVonta Smith during the third quarter, which could have turned into a touchdown if accurately thrown. Towards the end of the match, Hurts was intercepted by Cor’Dale Flott, who made a significant 68-yard return. This marked Hurts’ first interception of the current season and only his second over the span of 15 games, with the other occurring in the previous Super Bowl.
The Eagles had their moments during the game, notably executing the tush push four consecutive times in the second quarter, resulting in a touchdown from Hurts. Additionally, Hurts showed his playmaking ability by delivering a shovel-pass touchdown to Dallas Goedert. However, the missteps from Hurts, coupled with defensive lapses, raised alarm bells as the team faced its first consecutive losses since experiencing three straight defeats at the end of the 2023 regular season, which ultimately led to their elimination from playoff contention.
This current stretch of challenges also included the Giants’ rare victory against the Eagles, which was only their fourth win in the last 18 contests between these two NFC East rivals. The history of their matchups added another layer of significance to this game.
After the game, the players voiced their thoughts, with Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart reflecting on the unexpected success, saying, “Quite honestly, nobody really expected us to put up a performance like this. We felt confident. We just tried to play hard for each other. We’re not trying to make statements. We’re just trying to play for each other and win games.”
Skattebo, clearly proud of his achievement, jokingly stated, “I’m going to sleep with No. 3 (game ball) tonight as my pillow. We played hard, and props to the guys up front for all the effort they gave me and this team.” Meanwhile, head coach Brian Daboll emphasized the growth potential from challenging moments, expressing his confidence in the young players and their resolve to succeed.
Conversely, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “You play the game to win. Obviously, we’re competitive in that and trying to figure that out. We’ve got some work to do, and that’s all that matters.” Coach Nick Sirianni also recognized the team’s shortcomings, remarking, “We have a lot of things to get fixed. We just had an off night. Everybody did.”
As both teams look ahead to their next games, the Eagles will aim to regain their momentum, while the Giants will seek to build on this hard-fought victory.
