The Turkish Football Federation has made a bold move aimed at preserving the integrity of the sport by suspending 149 referees and assistant referees due to their alleged participation in a major betting scandal concerning professional soccer leagues. On a Friday announcement, the federation revealed that the penalties for these officials would range from eight to twelve months, a decision that reflects the gravity of their misconduct. Federation president İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu issued a powerful statement emphasizing the critical importance of integrity in soccer, asserting that the sport’s reputation hinges on the principles of fair competition and an unwavering dedication to justice. Among the 152 referees identified as having engaged in betting activities were several high-ranking officials, including seven top-level referees and 15 top-level assistants. The magnitude of this scandal is particularly concerning; Hacıosmanoğlu disclosed that ten referees had engaged in betting on more than 10,000 matches each over five years, suggesting a deeply entrenched culture of misconduct. Notably, one referee allegedly placed bets on a staggering 18,227 games, raising serious questions about the integrity of individual matches.
The investigations extend beyond just referees, as reports indicate that clubs and players are also under scrutiny for their potential involvement in these illicit betting practices.
