The tragic passing of Marshawn Kneeland, a 24-year-old defensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys, has sent shockwaves through the football community. Kneeland, who was a second-round draft pick from Western Michigan in the 2024 NFL Draft, had recently celebrated scoring his first NFL touchdown just days before his untimely death.
On the night of November 5, 2025, local police in Frisco, Texas, were involved in a multi-agency search after Kneeland fled from a vehicle pursuit. The Frisco Police Department, in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), responded to a situation where a vehicle had evaded law enforcement. After the vehicle was found crashed on Dallas Parkway, Kneeland was reported to have fled on foot.
Following reports of his suicidal ideations, police initiated a search using K-9 units and drones. Tragically, Kneeland was discovered deceased at approximately 1:31 a.m. on November 6, 2025, with indications suggesting a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing, and the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.
The Dallas Cowboys expressed their profound sorrow in a statement, highlighting Kneeland as a cherished teammate and a vital part of their organization. They extended their condolences to his girlfriend, Catalina, and his family. Kneeland had made significant contributions on the field this season, recording 15 tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, and 6 quarterback hurries in just seven games.
“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” said the Cowboys in a statement.
“Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organisation. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
The NFL also released a statement mourning his loss, emphasizing the impact he had on those around him and offering support to his family and teammates. Kneeland’s college career was marked by impressive statistics, including 27.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles over 38 games at Western Michigan.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland,” the NFL said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, family, friends and his teammates. We have been in contact with the Cowboys and have offered support and counselling resources.”
Kneeland’s agent, Jonathan Perzley, expressed his devastation over the loss, recalling Kneeland’s journey from a hopeful college athlete to a respected professional. He described Kneeland as someone who dedicated himself fully to the game, and his passing leaves a significant void in the lives of those who knew him.
“I am shattered to confirm that my client and dearest friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night,” said Kneeland’s agent Jonathan Perzley in a statement, per the NFL.
“I watched him fight his way from a hopeful kid at Western Michigan with a dream to being a respected professional for the Dallas Cowboys. Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice, and every moment on the field. To lose someone with his talent, spirit, and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words.
“My heart aches for his family, his teammates, and everyone who loved him, and I hope they feel the support of the entire football community during this unimaginable time. I ask that you please give his loved ones the privacy and compassion they need as they grieve this tremendous loss.”
The Cowboys are currently on a bye week and are scheduled to return to the field against the Las Vegas Raiders on November 17, 2025, for Monday Night Football in Week 11. The NFL Players Association has also voiced its sorrow, recognizing the immeasurable impact Kneeland had on his community and the importance of providing support to players during such difficult times.
This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the challenges many athletes face, both on and off the field, and the need for continued support and resources for mental health within the sports community.
