Former Formula 1 driver Mick Schumacher is set to make a significant career move by racing in the 2026 IndyCar Series with the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) team. This marks an exciting new chapter for the 26-year-old, who is not only the son of legendary seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher but also a talented driver in his own right.
Having left his position as a Mercedes reserve driver at the conclusion of the 2024 season, Schumacher is eager to shift his focus towards IndyCar racing. His journey in Formula 1 saw him accumulate 43 race starts before parting ways with the Haas team in 2022. After his departure from Haas, he signed with Mercedes, during which time he hoped for a victorious return to the F1 grid. However, Schumacher faced setbacks as he was not selected by the Sauber/Audi and Alpine teams for the following season, prompting him to seek opportunities elsewhere.
During the years 2024 and 2025, he found success competing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship, achieving an impressive three podium finishes out of 16 starts. This experience has undoubtedly equipped him with valuable insights and skills that will serve him well in the highly competitive environment of IndyCar racing.
Schumacher expressed his enthusiasm for joining the RLL team, stating, “Having both an F1 and an endurance background, and having competed in various racing series over the years, I have insights and knowledge that I am sure will contribute to a great partnership.” This statement highlights his confidence in his abilities and his optimistic anticipation for the future.
Team co-owner Bobby Rahal also shared his excitement over Schumacher’s addition to the team. He praised Schumacher’s recent performance during a test on the IMS road course, remarking, “His test with us was exceptional; he impressed every single team member.” It is clear that Schumacher made a strong impression during this evaluation, leading the team to eagerly pursue him. Rahal added, “Everyone walked away from that event determined to do what we could to bring Mick into our programme. We’re thrilled he’s chosen to join us, and we can’t wait to get to work.”
In the upcoming 2026 season, Schumacher will take the wheel of the number 47 Honda, joining fellow RLL team-mates Graham Rahal and 2025 Rookie of the Year Louis Foster. This partnership aims to harness the collective strengths of diverse experiences as they tackle the challenges of the road ahead.
The 17-race 2026 IndyCar Series season is set to begin with the Firestone Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, Florida, on March 1. This inaugural race promises to showcase the intense competition and exhilarating action that IndyCar is known for, and fans will undoubtedly be eager to see how Schumacher performs in this new adventure. With his remarkable heritage and extensive racing background, he is poised to make a mark in this exciting new arena.
