NFL: Chiefs’ playoff hopes dim after loss to Texans

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs faced a significant setback to their NFL playoff aspirations as they suffered a defeat at the hands of the Houston Texans, dropping their record to 6-7 for the season. This loss is particularly shocking given that the Chiefs had previously reached five of the last six Super Bowl championships, showcasing their consistency and dominance in the league. As Week 14 wraps up, the attention now shifts to the highly anticipated Monday Night Football matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Chargers.

In the game, C.J. Stroud showcased his talents by throwing for 203 yards along with a touchdown, leading the Texans to a 20-10 victory at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs. The Houston Texans relied heavily on the NFL’s top-ranked defense, which played a crucial role in neutralizing Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense. Stroud’s performance was aided by Nico Collins, who made four catches for an impressive 121 yards. Additionally, Dare Ogunbowale’s go-ahead touchdown run in the fourth quarter solidified the Texans’ fifth straight victory, putting them in a favorable position within the AFC South as they now trail the Jacksonville Jaguars by just one game.

Mahomes had a challenging game, finishing with a mere 14 completions on 33 attempts for 160 yards, with no touchdowns and three costly interceptions. This included a pivotal interception late in the fourth quarter while the Chiefs were desperate to tie the game and force overtime. The loss not only bolstered the Texans’ playoff hopes, whether for a division title or a wild-card spot, but it also dealt a severe blow to the Chiefs, marking their worst record through 13 games since the 2012 season when they started at 2-11.

Historically, the Chiefs had a solid track record against the Texans, winning five consecutive matches prior to this encounter, which included a playoff victory last January. However, the rematch on Sunday night showcased how drastically both teams had changed since their last meeting. The Texans entered the game with momentum, aiming to join an exclusive group of teams—like the Texans of 2018, who rebounded from an 0-3 start to make the playoffs—while the Chiefs were left struggling amidst a season marred by injuries, underperformances, and a series of mistakes that kept piling up.

The first half of the game was a stark reflection of the Chiefs’ struggles. Stroud, who had a strong performance against Indianapolis the previous week upon returning from a concussion, connected with Collins for a significant 46-yard gain that set up a field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn. His performance continued to shine as he threw a 53-yard pass leading to a short touchdown toss to Woody Marks. Meanwhile, the Chiefs suffered more setbacks, with left tackle Wanya Morris and cornerback Trent McDuffie sidelined due to injury, leaving Mahomes with a makeshift offensive line that included three backups and a defense missing its star cornerback.

The Chiefs managed a paltry 98 yards in the first half and found themselves trailing 10-0 at halftime—a rare occurrence for Mahomes, marking just the second time in the regular season that the Chiefs were shut out in the first half since he took over as quarterback. Despite these challenges, the Chiefs’ defense performed admirably, forcing Stroud into eight consecutive incompletions to begin the second half, allowing Mahomes and the offense an opportunity to claw back into the contest. They did just that, first with a touchdown run from Kareem Hunt and then with a field goal from Harrison Butker to level the score at 10-10.

The game’s outcome significantly hinged on two fourth-down calls made early in the first quarter. With the score tied at 10-10, the Texans faced a fourth-and-one situation at their own 35-yard line and chose to punt, playing it safe. Contrarily, the Chiefs, in a similar fourth-and-one situation at their own 31-yard line, decided to go for it but ended up with Mahomes throwing an incomplete pass with just over 10 minutes left in the game. This critical misstep opened the door for the Texans. Just six plays later, Ogunbowale surged into the end zone from five yards out, granting Houston the lead once more.

The drama continued for the Chiefs as they failed on another fourth down shortly after when Rashee Rice dropped a wide-open pass that would have easily moved the chains and provided a fresh set of downs. Finally, with one last chance to rally for a comeback, Mahomes was intercepted, sealing their fate and ending any hope for the defending AFC champions in what turned out to be a pivotal moment in the season.
