NFL Kicker Smyth Signs New Three-Year Deal with Saints

Kicker Charlie Smyth has officially inked a new three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, and for the first time in his professional career, he has been promoted to the team’s full 53-man roster. This development marks a significant leap forward for Smyth as he establishes his presence in the NFL.

Last week, Smyth made headlines by successfully executing a game-winning field goal against the Carolina Panthers, demonstrating his capability to perform when the stakes are highest. Due to NFL regulations, following three elevations from the practice squad this season, the 24-year-old native of County Down, Northern Ireland, was required to secure a place on the 53-man roster in order to continue playing. This move enables him to participate in the upcoming game against the New York Jets, further elevating his status within the organization.

Looking ahead, Smyth is poised to make his fourth consecutive start in the NFL during the matchup against the Jets, scheduled at the Superdome on Sunday at 18:00 GMT. The excitement surrounding this game is considerable, as both fans and analysts are keen to see how Smyth continues to develop and adapt to the demands of professional football.

Initially, Smyth joined the Saints’ practice squad as part of the league’s international player pathway program, which aims to support and integrate talented players from outside the United States into the NFL. He signed his first contract back in March 2024, and since then, his journey in American football has been both fascinating and inspirational.

His elevation to the active roster earlier this month came as he filled in for Blake Grupe, a former kicker who was released by the team and has since signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Notably, Smyth managed to secure the starting position after effectively competing against experienced kicker Cade York, showcasing his skill and determination to succeed.

In his NFL debut against the Miami Dolphins last month, Smyth made an immediate impression by successfully kicking a remarkable 56-yard field goal, along with executing an onside kick that showcased his versatility. Smyth’s performance continued to shine during a significant victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, followed by a clutch 46-yard kick just seconds before the end of his home debut.

Throughout his first three games, Smyth has successfully converted nine out of ten kick attempts, highlighting his reliability and talent as a kicker. As he prepares for the upcoming battle against the Jets, there is a palpable sense of anticipation among Saints fans about the contributions he can make and the potential impact he could have on the team’s performance in the ongoing season. Each game offers him further opportunities to cement his place as a key player for the Saints, and his journey is certainly one to watch.
