OFFICIAL: Chelsea confirm Liam Rosenior as their new head coach on a contract valid until June 2032

Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Liam Rosenior as their new head coach, securing his services on a significant six-and-a-half-year contract that will extend until 2032. This development marks a pivotal moment for the club as they seek stability and direction following a tumultuous period. Rosenior comes to Chelsea after a stint at Strasbourg and takes over a role that has proven challenging for his predecessors.

Speaking to the media following his appointment, Rosenior expressed deep gratitude and a sense of honor in taking the helm of a club renowned for its rich heritage and ambitious spirit. “I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed head coach of Chelsea Football Club. This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies,” he stated, signaling his understanding of the high expectations that come with such a prestigious position.

Rosenior is set to debut in his new role in an FA Cup third-round tie against Championship side Charlton Athletic, which will be a crucial opportunity to make an immediate impact. Until then, Callum McFarlane, who managed to secure a draw in a challenging match against Manchester City, will oversee Chelsea’s next Premier League game against Fulham.

Before making the move to Stamford Bridge, Rosenior confirmed his upcoming transition during a press conference at Strasbourg, highlighting his readiness for the challenge. The former Hull City boss conveyed the significance of this opportunity, stating, “I was given permission to speak to one of the biggest clubs in the world. It was an honour to be associated with a club like that and, now, it looks like I will be the next manager of that football club.”

Rosenior’s journey to this prestigious position includes a diverse playing career spanning 16 years, where he represented teams such as Bristol City, Fulham, Reading, Hull City, and Brighton. After retiring from playing in 2018, he nearly led Hull City to the Championship play-offs in 2024 before taking on the head coach position at Strasbourg, a club owned by Chelsea’s parent company, BlueCo, which finished seventh in Ligue 1 last season.

Despite the concerns regarding his relative inexperience at the top level—having managed fewer than 100 matches—Rosenior remains optimistic about his capabilities. “I am so excited for the future; my whole life has worked to be a coach, and now to be presented this opportunity at a world-class football (club) is something I have always dreamed of,” he remarked. He expressed a mix of excitement and sadness, acknowledging the difficulty of leaving Strasbourg, where he has built strong connections.

He continued, “I hope the fans here can understand that. I am looking forward to the challenge; if I didn’t think I was ready, I wouldn’t have accepted it. The reality is Strasbourg is not on the level as Chelsea. There are certain clubs you just cannot turn down. I hope the fans can see that.”

Rosenior’s predecessor, Enzo Maresca, departed on January 1, a decision made amidst the breakdown of relations with the club hierarchy, further emphasising the urgent need for stable leadership moving forward. The upcoming matches will be crucial for Rosenior as he works to unite the team and re-establish Chelsea’s competitive edge.
