NBA commissioner Adam Silver has expressed a keen interest in integrating elements of Europe’s football culture into a proposed European basketball league, reflecting a strategic move to expand the NBA’s global footprint. Silver’s intention is to “tap into” the rich traditions and fervent support associated with European football as part of this ambitious venture.
In recent discussions, Silver mentioned interactions with prominent football clubs, including Manchester City and Manchester United, although sources from BBC Sport indicate that neither club plans to field a basketball team if the league comes to life. The tentative name for this ambitious initiative is NBA Europe, which aims to establish a permanent basketball league spanning the continent, potentially debuting in the 2027-28 season. The blueprint includes the participation of up to 16 teams from various regions, with London and Manchester being highlighted as likely hosts for at least one franchise each.
Silver elaborated on the extensive groundwork being laid, revealing that he is in talks with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure all interested parties are included in the planning process. “We’re having conversations with everyone,” he stated, emphasizing the complexity and significance of the discussions that have prolonged the planning phase. His journey towards discussing the league publicly began around the Paris Olympics, highlighting a commitment to thorough outreach and collaboration.
