Mercedes chief designer John Owen is set to depart from the team later this year, marking the end of an era for the renowned automotive manufacturer. The 52-year-old designer has been an integral part of the team since 2007 when it operated under the Honda name. His tenure has been characterized by significant contributions to the team’s success, particularly during the exceptional championship seasons under the Brawn GP brand in 2009 and subsequently as Mercedes from 2010 onward.
Under Owen’s guidance, the team celebrated numerous triumphs, including winning the drivers’ and constructors’ titles while racing as Brawn. The impressive record continued as Mercedes dominated the sport from 2014 to 2021, securing a staggering seven drivers’ championships and eight constructors’ championships. His innovative designs and strategic insights have played a pivotal role in establishing Mercedes as one of the leading teams in Formula 1.
In a statement, Mercedes confirmed that Owen would leave the team after ensuring a smooth transition to his successor. Following this transition, he will enter a period of gardening leave, allowing him time to step away from the immediate pressures of the racing environment. At this time, there has yet to be any official announcement regarding Owen’s future career plans, leaving fans and colleagues alike curious about his next steps.
As part of the restructuring within the design team, engineering director Giacomo Tortora will take on the role of director of car design, a critical position that will be supervised by deputy technical director Simone Resta. This shift marks a significant change within the team, as it seeks to maintain its competitive edge following Owen’s departure.
Before joining Mercedes, Owen made a name for himself at the Swiss Sauber team, where he rose to the position of senior aerodynamicist in 2004. His journey began in the world of motorsport at the now-defunct racing car manufacturer Reynard, where he honed his engineering skills and developed a deep understanding of race car dynamics and design.
John Owen’s legacy at Mercedes is one of innovation and success, and his contributions will not be forgotten as the team looks toward a new chapter in its illustrious history.
