Official: Douglas Luiz returns to Aston Villa from Juventus on loan deal with €25m buy option

Aston Villa has successfully re-acquired Douglas Luiz on loan with an option to buy for €25 million (£23.4 million). This strategic move serves as a crucial response to the club’s ongoing midfield injury crisis. By bringing Luiz back into the fold, Villa aims to navigate the challenges posed by several of their key players being sidelined.

The Brazilian midfielder, aged 27, initially left Aston Villa in the summer of 2024. His departure was a critical decision made to comply with Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR), as the club faced the looming risk of a significant points deduction due to financial concerns. These pressures forced Villa to make tough choices regarding their player roster.

Luiz transitioned to Juventus for a hefty fee of £42 million, which also saw Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior moving the other way. However, his time in Italy did not pan out as hoped. The midfielder struggled with a series of injuries, which understandably impeded his ability to perform at the high level associated with his earlier career. This situation eventually led to a disappointing run in Serie A, where he started only three matches throughout the entire previous season.

After finding himself surplus to requirements at Juventus, Luiz was made available for transfer and subsequently joined Nottingham Forest just before the closure of the summer transfer window. The deal included a conditional obligation that would make the transfer permanent the following summer, contingent upon meeting certain performance benchmarks. Unfortunately, Luiz was unable to regain the form that once impressed under Unai Emery at Aston Villa, resulting in a rather underwhelming stint at Forest. During his time there, he made 14 appearances and started in 10 of those matches, managing just one goal contribution—a solitary assist recorded during a match against Real Betis in Spain.

Despite showing potential suitors like Chelsea some interest, Aston Villa acted promptly to bring Luiz back to Villa Park after Youri Tielemans sustained a significant injury. The Belgian midfielder is estimated to be sidelined for around two months due to an ankle injury he suffered in a recent 2-0 victory over Newcastle United, highlighting the urgency of Villa’s decision.

Moreover, Villa is grappling with additional injury woes, most notably the long-term absence of Boubacar Kamara, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. John McGinn’s situation is also concerning, as he is expected to miss several weeks but aims for a return to action by March.

On a more optimistic note, there is good news regarding Ross Barkley, who is nearing a comeback. He is set to return to training this week after a knee injury kept him sidelined for an extended period. Barkley’s return is expected to offer Villa additional depth and creativity in midfield, making his comeback crucial as the team navigates this difficult spell with multiple injuries. Adding Luiz back into the mix provides Villa with both quality and experience, essential assets as they seek to build momentum and maintain strong performance levels throughout the season.
