Anthony Joshua’s July Return Uncertain; Tyson Fury Fight Off After Fatal Car Crash, Says Eddie Hearn

Anthony Joshua is actively targeting a return to the boxing ring in July, following a harrowing experience during the Christmas period when he was involved in a fatal car crash while visiting family in Nigeria. This tragic incident resulted in the loss of two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, who were also part of his training team. The accident left Joshua hospitalized, but fortunately, he has since recovered and is looking to get back into the sport he loves.

In a compelling demonstration of his resilience, Joshua recently secured a sixth-round knockout victory against Jake Paul in Miami, showcasing his readiness to compete again. However, despite the excitement around his return, his promoter, Eddie Hearn, has confirmed that Joshua will not be facing Tyson Fury in his next match. Fury is currently preparing to take on Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 11, marking his first bout since his rematch loss to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024.

Hearn elaborated on Joshua’s future plans in an interview with The Sportsman. He mentioned that Joshua was originally slated to return to the ring in March with a fight against Fury, but those plans have since changed. Hearn stated, “That’s not happening anymore. He won’t be fighting Tyson Fury next.”

The promoter highlighted that they do not have any concrete plans finalized yet for Joshua’s comeback, but the primary focus now is to get him back into training camp. According to Hearn, Joshua is not quite physically ready to resume training just yet, but he is making progress and is eager to return to his training routine. “I think there’s nothing more that he wants at the moment than to return to training camp because it’s where he loves to be,” Hearn remarked.

With that in mind, the tentative goal for Joshua’s return to the ring is set for July. Hearn mentioned that they are exploring multiple options worldwide for this potential comeback, as they aim to set the stage for a significant return to boxing. “I haven’t spoken that deeply with Anthony yet until he gets back into camp, and hopefully that will be in the next couple of weeks,” Hearn concluded, leaving fans and boxing enthusiasts eagerly awaiting updates on Joshua’s future endeavors in the sport. The coming months will be critical not only for Joshua’s physical recovery but also for his mental resilience as he prepares to re-enter the competitive boxing arena.
