Jessica Pegula Claims 10th WTA Title, Beats Svitolina in Dubai

Jessica Pegula expressed immense satisfaction with her outstanding start to 2026, following her straight-sets victory over Elina Svitolina to claim the Dubai Tennis Championships title. This win represents a pivotal moment in Pegula’s career, particularly given the competitive environment of professional tennis.

Seeded fourth in the tournament, Pegula demonstrated remarkable form leading up to the final. She reached the semi-finals of both the Brisbane International and the Australian Open earlier in January, showcasing her talent and consistency on the court. Her triumph in Dubai, marked by a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over seventh-seeded Svitolina, solidified her status as a top contender in women’s tennis.

After winning her 10th WTA title, Pegula reflected on her recent performances, noting that this victory felt well-deserved after a streak of seven consecutive semi-finals on the Tour. In her own words, she remarked, “I can’t ask for much more. The last six months I’ve been playing some really good tennis.” This sentiment highlights her commitment to improvement and her ability to perform under pressure. She had hoped for a title, saying, “I made seven consecutive semi-finals and I was like, ‘You know what, a title would be nice, maybe it will happen this week’, and it did.” Her determination and belief in herself ultimately paid off.

Adding a personal touch to her celebration, Pegula acknowledged that winning the title served as an exceptional birthday present, as she is set to celebrate her 32nd birthday on February 24. This win not only marks a professional milestone but also adds a layer of personal significance.

Meanwhile, Svitolina, who had an impressive but grueling day prior in her three-hour match against Coco Gauff, may have felt the lingering effects as she stepped onto the court for the final. Despite her past successes in Dubai, where she clinched the title in 2017 and 2018, she encountered a fierce competitor in Pegula, who established dominance from the outset.

Right from the beginning, Pegula raced to an early double break in the first set. Although Svitolina attempted to mount a comeback, Pegula’s commanding performance meant that Svitolina struggled to regain her footing—a reflection of her opponent’s skill and strategic play. Ultimately, the first set concluded with Svitolina falling into the net, unable to counter Pegula’s assertiveness.

As the match progressed into the second set, Pegula maintained her aggressive style of play, utilizing deep and angled shots that continuously pressured Svitolina. Despite saving one championship point during her service game, Svitolina was unable to stem the tide of defeat, as Pegula powered through and clinched the title with an ace, showcasing her ability to perform brilliantly in high-stakes situations.

With this significant victory, Pegula joins the ranks of esteemed American tennis legends, becoming only the third American woman to win the Dubai Tennis Championships, following the illustrious careers of Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams, who boasts three titles in the tournament. This win not only enhances her reputation in the world of tennis but also sets a positive trajectory for her journey in the rest of the 2026 season, full of anticipation and potential for further accomplishments.
