The Kansas City Chiefs are currently addressing a critical need for a seasoned backup quarterback, prompted by uncertainties surrounding the health of their star player, two-time league MVP Patrick Mahomes. Following a challenging season where Mahomes suffered a torn ACL, concerns loom about his readiness to start the 2026 season. To bolster their quarterback depth, the Chiefs have executed a trade with the New York Jets to acquire Justin Fields.
Fields is expected to serve not only as a backup but as a crucial component of the team’s strategy while Mahomes focuses on rehabilitation. As part of the trade agreement, the Jets will receive a sixth-round draft pick in 2027, and they will continue to cover $7 million of Fields’ total guaranteed salary of $10 million for the upcoming season. This trade is in the process of finalization and hinges on Fields successfully passing a required physical examination.
Mahomes, displaying determination to return to the field, expressed his intentions clearly: “I want to be ready for Week 1,” he stated earlier this year. While he holds onto hope for an early return, he acknowledged the unpredictability inherent in the healing process. “The doctors said I could, but I can’t predict what happens throughout the process. That’s the goal, to play Week One and have no restrictions,” he pointed out, highlighting both his ambition and the cautious nature of recovery.
Justin Fields, who signed a two-year contract with the Jets just last March, faced significant adversity during his time with the team. After starting the season with high expectations, he was benched in November in favor of Tyrod Taylor, marking a significant shift as the Jets concluded the 2025 season with a disappointing 3-14 record. Fields’ performance as a starter was underwhelming, with a record of 2-7. In terms of statistics, he managed to throw seven touchdown passes but only one interception, offering glimpses of his potential. Regrettably, he fell short in terms of consistency, leading to alarming performances where he recorded fewer than 55 passing yards in four separate games, including a particularly stark low of just 27 yards during a Week Two loss against the Buffalo Bills.
The recent acquisition of Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders further highlighted Fields’ precarious place in the Jets’ roster, cementing suspicions that his chapter with the Jets was nearing a close. Fields was originally selected as the 11th overall pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2021 NFL Draft, but his journey has been marked by ups and downs. His initial stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers started with promise: Fields took the helm as their starter during a time when Russell Wilson was sidelined due to a calf injury. He demonstrated his capability with five touchdown passes and an equal number of TD runs, thus leading the Steelers to a solid 4-2 start. However, once Wilson returned to full health, the Steelers reverted to the veteran quarterback, which relegated Fields back to the sidelines.
Upon joining the Jets to replace Aaron Rodgers, who was released prior to the start of the previous season, Fields entered with confidence and a belief that he could rediscover his form as an NFL starter. Unfortunately, the anticipated resurgence never materialized in New York. After an abysmal start to the 2025 season, marked by a record of 0-7, Jets owner Woody Johnson publicly examined the reasons behind the team’s failures, placing significant blame on subpar quarterback performance from Fields. “The defense is pretty good. If we can just complete a pass, it would look good,” Johnson stated at the NFL’s fall owners meetings last October, illustrating the team’s desperate need for improvement in offensive productivity. “We’ve got to complete some passes. You’ve got to convince them that you can do something,” he added, emphasizing the urgency for Fields to step up.
As the Chiefs prepare to integrate Fields into their organization, the upcoming season holds significant implications for both him and the team. With a solid chance to renew his career and learn from a legendary quarterback like Mahomes, Fields will be under considerable scrutiny to demonstrate his ability to contribute meaningfully. The franchise, aiming to build a formidable team around Mahomes, will undoubtedly hope that Fields can be a pivotal figure during this transitional phase, ensuring that they possess a capable backup in case the challenges of recovery become more pronounced than anticipated.
