Tiger Woods has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI), property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test following a rollover car crash in Jupiter Island, Florida, where he resides. The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. local time on a road with a 30 mph speed limit. Woods was attempting to overtake a trailer when his vehicle collided with it, rolled onto its side, and slid a considerable distance before coming to a stop.
According to Sheriff John Budensiek of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Woods showed signs of impairment at the scene, appearing lethargic, which police believe was due to medication rather than alcohol. Woods underwent several roadside tests, and although he explained his prior injuries and surgeries, the tests indicated impairment. He took a breathalyzer test at the scene, which returned a negative result (triple zeros), but he refused to provide a urine sample when requested, leading to the additional charge of refusal to submit to a lawful test.
Budensiek said: “The DUI investigators came to the scene and Mr Woods did exemplify signs of impairment.
“They did several tests on him. He did explain the injuries and surgeries that he’s had and we did take that into account, but they did so some in-depth roadside tests.
“When it was determined, he was placed under arrest and taken to the Martin County jail.
“At the Martin County jail, and even on scene, we were really not suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case and that proved to be true.
“Mr Woods did a breathalyser test with triple zeros, but when it came time for us to ask for a urinary analysis test, he refused and so he has been charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.”
Budensiek added that Woods had been driving at “high speed” and his vehicle tipped on to its side and then “slid for a pretty decent space before he came to a stop”.
Woods was arrested and taken to the Martin County jail, where he will remain for at least eight hours before being eligible for release on bond. The charges are misdemeanors, not felonies. No injuries were reported to Woods or the other driver involved in the crash.
This incident comes five years after a near-fatal accident that left Woods fearing he might lose his leg, highlighting ongoing challenges related to his health and recovery. Despite the serious nature of this crash, Woods was fortunate to escape without physical injury this time
