Daniil Medvedev secured a spot in the finals of the US Open after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in four sets. He is now set to face Novak Djokovic in a highly anticipated rematch of the 2021 US Open final.
In an impressive victory, Daniil Medvedev dethroned Carlos Alcaraz as the US Open champion, winning the match 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 3-6 6-3. Medvedev will now face Novak Djokovic in the final.
In tennis, the much-anticipated rivalry between Djokovic and Alcaraz will not continue with a final on Sunday.
There will be intriguing storylines surrounding a 36-year-old tennis player as he strives to win his fourth US Open. This achievement would put him on par with Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles. Additionally, it would also serve as sweet revenge against Medvedev, who defeated him in straight sets during the same tournament two years ago, preventing a calendar Grand Slam.
“It’s amazing, especially beating someone like Carlos,” Medvedev said. “I lost easy two to him two times this year so I had a lot of doubts.
“I said I needed to play 11 out of 10, and I actually played 12 out of 10, except in the third set. He’s pretty unbelievable so to beat him you need to be better than yourself and fortunately I was.”
Medvedev’s relationship with the US Open crowd has been complex and fraught with mixed emotions.
He added: “I have to be honest, the crowd was unbelievable today. We had some crazy points and I felt, let’s call it, love to both guys.
“At 5-3 I guess we had some Spanish guys calling out between first and second serves, but they can go to sleep now.”
In a closely contested match, the first set saw no break opportunities for Medvedev and a few missed chances for Alcaraz. Medvedev’s dominance in tie-breaks at Flushing Meadows added to the pressure on Alcaraz, causing his smile to fade.
Alcaraz became concerned when he was broken twice in the second set, putting him at a significant disadvantage.
The 20-year-old Spaniard achieved a notable feat in his tennis career by making a comeback from being two sets down to win a match.
Alcaraz managed to engineer his first break of Medvedev’s serve after two hours of toiling. He sealed the deal with a superb backhand lob, reducing the deficit.
In the crucial sixth game of the fourth set, Alcaraz’s missed volley gave Medvedev the break for a 4-2 lead.
Alcaraz had a chance to break Medvedev’s serve at 3-5 down, but Medvedev managed to save two break points. However, Medvedev made a crucial double fault on his first match point.
Medvedev saved match points to reach the US Open final.
“The challenge is that you play a guy that won 23 Grand Slams, and I have only one,” Medvedev said, looking ahead to taking on Djokovic.
“When I beat him here, I managed to play better than myself, so I need to do it again. There is no other way.”
