Tom Lockyer: Luton captain suffers cardiac arrest as Bournemouth vs Luton called off

Luton Town Football Club has provided an update on the condition of their captain, Tom Lockyer, who suffered a cardiac arrest during their match against Bournemouth. The club has described Lockyer as “responsive” and “stable” after being taken to the hospital.

In a statement released by Luton, they confirmed that Lockyer experienced a cardiac arrest while on the pitch, but fortunately, he was responsive by the time he was stretchered off. The medical staff promptly attended to him and took all necessary measures to stabilize his condition. Lockyer was then transferred to the hospital, where he is currently undergoing further tests with his family by his side.

The incident occurred in the 58th minute of the match, leading to its eventual abandonment. Luton manager Rob Edwards acted swiftly, ensuring the safety of his players and allowing medical professionals to provide immediate treatment to Lockyer. The players and officials stood by, deeply concerned, until the decision was made to suspend play and return to the changing rooms.

Luton Football Club expressed their gratitude to both the medical teams from Luton and Bournemouth who provided prompt on-site treatment for Lockyer. They also extended their appreciation to the supporters for their overwhelming support, concern, and well-wishes for Lockyer’s recovery.

The abandoned match evoked memories of a similar incident that occurred during May’s Championship final when Lockyer collapsed on the pitch in the 11th minute. Although that incident was attributed to atrial fibrillation, Lockyer recovered after undergoing surgery and was given medical clearance to continue playing. The recent cardiac arrest episode, however, understandably raised concerns about his well-being.

Following the abandonment, Luton manager Rob Edwards led his players in a respectful walk around the pitch, acknowledging the support of both sets of fans. The Premier League also expressed their thoughts and concern for Lockyer and all the players involved in the match.

Lockyer, who is also an international player for Wales, received support from his national football association as well. The Welsh FA took to social media to express their thoughts and offered their support to Lockyer during this challenging time.

Now, the focus is on supporting Tom Lockyer and his family as he continues his recovery. The football community stands united in sending heartfelt well-wishes, hoping for a full and speedy recovery for the courageous Luton captain.
