Lando Norris achieved a significant milestone in his Formula 1 career by securing his first-ever victory at the Miami Grand Prix, after competing in 110 races. The McLaren driver’s triumph was particularly noteworthy as he expertly capitalized on a timely Safety Car intervention and then proceeded to pull ahead of the pack with impressive pace, leaving Max Verstappen and other rivals in his wake.
Breaking free from the unwanted record of securing the most podium finishes without a win in his six seasons in F1, Norris initially held the sixth position in the early stages of the race. However, McLaren’s strategic decision to extend his initial stint proved to be a game-changer, especially when the Safety Car was deployed following a crash involving Williams’ Logan Sargeant.
Benefiting from the pit stops of the cars ahead, including the race leader Verstappen, Norris inherited the lead and crucially retained it after making a pit stop under the Safety Car, while his competitors navigated the track at reduced speeds.
Despite his lead, the race was far from decided when it resumed with 24 laps remaining, as Verstappen, initially expected to secure another comfortable win, aggressively trailed him. Impressively, Norris displayed remarkable composure, consistently extending his lead over the Red Bull driver in the remaining laps, ultimately clinching victory with a comfortable seven-second lead.
This triumph marked McLaren’s first win since Daniel Ricciardo’s victory at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix and only their second in the past 12 years, solidifying Norris’s achievement. Verstappen, who had dominated the preceding sessions in Miami’s Sprint weekend, had to settle for a distant second place, with Charles Leclerc securing third ahead of Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz.
Lewis Hamilton, amid a challenging season, delivered his strongest performance so far by finishing in sixth place for Mercedes, trailing the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez by less than two seconds. Yuki Tsunoda claimed eighth place, ahead of the second Mercedes driven by George Russell, while Fernando Alonso showcased a commendable recovery from a disappointing qualifying session to secure ninth place for Aston Martin.
