Scott Law, 43, of Waltham Abbey, Essex, has been found guilty of assaulting former Manchester United captain Roy Keane during a Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium on September 3 last year. Keane was working as a pundit for Sky Sports at the time of the incident.
The confrontation occurred following Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United, with Keane and Micah Richards walking to conduct the final match analysis. Law was accused of headbutting Keane, who later expressed his shock and disbelief at the unexpected assault. Keane reported suffering bruising on his chest and arms as a result of the incident.
During the trial at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court, CCTV footage from inside the stadium was presented, showing Keane allegedly elbowing Law in the face. Keane shared his account in court, stating that he was hit while walking and fell back through some doors, emphasizing that the incident left him in a state of shock, especially since it occurred in his workplace.
In his defense, Law claimed that Keane had confronted him during the match, instructing him to “meet him outside” after a verbal exchange turned aggressive. However, the prosecution highlighted discrepancies in Law’s testimony, pointing out that his version of events had changed significantly from a prepared statement given to the police the day after the incident.
Moreover, the trial also featured testimony from Micah Richards, who denied accusations from Law’s defense barrister, stating that he intervened and grappled with Law after witnessing the alleged headbutt. Richards expressed his sympathy for Keane and described the incident as surreal, emphasizing that they were at work and not at a UFC match.
Ultimately, District Judge Angus Hamilton delivered the verdict, expressing his belief that Law had been untruthful about the events that transpired at the match. Judge Hamilton emphasized that there was no reason for Keane to have targeted Law in particular, stating that Keane appeared calm and not agitated when leaving the studio. The judge concluded that he was sure Law had assaulted Keane, prompting the guilty verdict.
Following the verdict, Law did not exhibit any visible reaction.
