Following his second goal, Demiral celebrated with a ‘wolf salute’, a gesture associated with the far-right extremist group Grey Wolves, which has connections to Turkey’s ruling coalition party, the National Movement Party. Notably, this salute is banned in countries such as Austria and France. Demiral indicated that the salute was planned in advance in case he scored, stating, “I had a goal celebration in mind, which I did. I am very proud because I am a Turk, therefore after the goal I felt it deeply and I wanted to do it, and I am very happy about doing it.”

Adding to the controversy, Demiral posted a photo of the celebration on his social media account with the caption: “How happy is the one who says I am a Turk!” This has further fueled the debate surrounding his actions.

Uefa initiated an investigation into the “alleged inappropriate behavior” of Demiral, citing Article 31(4). If found guilty, he could face a fine or suspension as Turkey prepares to take on the Netherlands in the upcoming quarter-final match. This development has sparked discussions and raised questions about the responsibilities of athletes as public figures, as well as the intersection of sports and politics.

Additionally, England midfielder Jude Bellingham is also under investigation for a gesture he made during the last-16 victory against Slovakia. Bellingham was seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture towards the Slovakian bench after scoring an overhead kick in stoppage time. This incident has drawn attention and sparked debates regarding sportsmanship and conduct on the field, further emphasizing the scrutiny that professional athletes face both on and off the pitch.
