Baldock, who earned his national caps for Greece, had recently joined Panathinaikos this summer after spending seven years at Sheffield United, making his debut for the club in August.
In a touching tribute shared on Instagram, Panathinaikos mourned the unexpected passing of their player: “We are devastated by the loss of our George. The Panathinaikos family grieves deeply for his untimely departure. We stand in solidarity with George’s family and relatives.”
The full-back was not included in the Greece national team roster for the upcoming match against England on Thursday, but he participated in a recent 0-0 draw against Olympiacos.

Super League Greece reiterated their sentiments, stating, “The entire Super League football family shares its profound sorrow over the premature loss of George Baldock, who represented Panathinaikos and the Greek national team. Our deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones.”
The Hellenic Football Federation also expressed their grief, stating, “With a heavy heart, the National Team and the Hellenic Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock. Harry Maguire, an England international and former Sheffield United teammate, shared a post on Instagram honoring Baldock, writing “RIP” alongside a heartbroken emoji and a photo of him.
Northampton Town, where Baldock was on loan in 2011, expressed their sadness on X, stating, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of former loanee George Baldock at the tragically young age of 31. George made five appearances during his loan spell in 2011 before moving on to play for Oxford United and Sheffield United. Our sincerest condolences go out to George’s family and friends.”
Born in England, Baldock began his professional football career at MK Dons, where he dedicated eight years. Following several loan spells at clubs such as Tamworth, Oxford United, and Northampton, he secured a permanent transfer to Sheffield United in 2017.
Over the course of his time at Sheffield United, he made over 200 appearances, including 83 in the Premier League, where he netted two goals and contributed six assists, before moving to the Greek club Panathinaikos this summer.
Baldock, who earned 12 caps for the Greek national team, participated in four matches across all competitions this season.
