Mats Hummels, the 36-year-old World Cup-winning German defender, has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of this season. His contract with AS Roma expires in June, marking the end of an 18-year career filled with accolades and memorable moments.

Hummels, born in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, rose through the ranks of Bayern Munich’s youth system, making his first-team debut in May 2007 at the age of 18. His journey then took him to Borussia Dortmund in January 2008, initially on loan. Dortmund became a pivotal stage in his career, where he played a key role in two Bundesliga titles under the legendary Jürgen Klopp. His performances cemented his status as one of the best defenders in the world.

In 2016, Hummels returned to Bayern Munich, adding three more Bundesliga titles to his impressive collection. After three years, he made a second move back to Borussia Dortmund, showcasing his loyalty and commitment to both clubs.

Hummels was an integral member of the German national team, earning 78 caps between 2010 and 2023, scoring five goals. His most significant achievement was winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a moment that solidified his place in football history. His contributions to the German national team earned him praise from current national coach Julian Nagelsmann, who lauded him as a benchmark and role model for a generation of defenders.

Hummels reached the Champions League final twice with Borussia Dortmund, in 2013 and 2024, although he ended up on the losing side on both occasions. In 2024, he joined AS Roma on a free transfer, making 18 appearances in all competitions this season.

Throughout his career, Hummels amassed an impressive record: 508 appearances for Dortmund, 118 for Bayern, and 18 for Roma. He scored 65 goals and provided 39 assists, accumulating a total of 15 trophies throughout his career. His retirement marks the end of an era for one of the most respected and accomplished defenders of his generation. His contributions to both club and country will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.
