Steelers’ TJ Watt Faces Recovery After Lung Surgery

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker TJ Watt has recently taken a significant step in his recovery after undergoing surgery to address a partially collapsed lung, an injury that arose from a dry needling procedure intended to ease his pain and mobility issues. This unfortunate development follows a strong performance where Watt, a standout player who earned the title of NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, recorded six tackles in the Steelers’ impressive win over the Baltimore Ravens the previous Sunday.

After experiencing discomfort on Wednesday, Watt promptly sought medical attention, leading him to the hospital for a thorough evaluation of his lung condition. Dry needling is a therapeutic technique that involves inserting fine needles into targeted areas of the body to relieve tension and pain; however, it unexpectedly led to a serious complication for the linebacker. Though the Steelers did provide a status update on Watt’s health on Friday, they did not mention the dry needling procedure involved. This important detail was later revealed by his older brother, JJ Watt, who shared insights via a post on social media platform X.

JJ Watt stated, “Yesterday, TJ had successful surgery to stabilize and repair a partially collapsed lung that occurred on Wednesday following a dry needling treatment session at the facility.” He continued by saying that while the timeline for recovery is still being evaluated, the surgery itself was successful and TJ is anticipated to be released from the hospital soon. The Watt family has expressed heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming support and kind messages they have received from fans and well-wishers during this challenging period.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed in a recent briefing that TJ Watt, who recently signed a three-year contract extension with the team in July, will be unable to participate in the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins. Coach Tomlin mentioned that Watt is currently at home resting comfortably, although he could not provide an estimated return date for the linebacker. The entire Steelers organization, along with their dedicated fanbase, is undoubtedly rallying behind TJ Watt as they hope for his speedy recovery and eventual return to the field, knowing how pivotal he is to the team’s defensive efforts as they continue through the remainder of the season.
