Mexico Deploys Massive Security Force for 2026 World Cup Amidst Cartel Violence

Mexico, one of the co-hosts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is implementing a massive security operation involving nearly 100,000 personnel. This measure is being taken in response to ongoing violence linked to drug cartels within the country.

The tournament will be held across three Mexican cities: Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara. While Mexico City and Monterrey have not been directly affected by recent violence, Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state, has been a focal point of cartel activity. This region has experienced significant incidents, including shootouts between cartels and the military, road blockades, and vehicle burnings. The violence escalated following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as ‘El Mencho,’ the leader of the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartel, who was a highly wanted figure by both Mexican and US authorities.

Despite these security concerns, both FIFA and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have expressed confidence that the World Cup will proceed safely and without disruption. President Sheinbaum unveiled “Plan Kukulkan,” a comprehensive security strategy named after a Mayan deity, which will cover all host cities and surrounding tourist areas.

This extensive plan will deploy over 99,000 individuals, including 20,000 military personnel, 55,000 police officers, and private security staff. The operation will also utilize approximately 2,500 military and civilian vehicles, 24 aircraft, advanced anti-drone systems, and specially trained dogs for detecting explosives and other substances. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has stated he feels “very reassured” by these measures.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place between June 11 and July 19, 2026. Mexico City will host the opening match between Mexico and South Africa. Other notable matches in Mexico include European champions Spain playing Uruguay in Guadalajara, and potential games for the Republic of Ireland if they qualify. Mexico is also set to host two Round of 32 matches and one Round of 16 tie.
